Reviewed by Don Larmore (Stories collected by Joseph Healey)Once upon a Time in Africa…… When I read this book, I thought plaid. Why plaid? Well, I once baptized a baby son of a Scottish family and they sent me a piece of framed plaid as a gift. This book is a grand gift to send to people who want a taste of the wild kin-dom of God’s technicolor love in Africa. Experienced African hands will have read some of the stories 102 times, but there are also some real gems for them. These reverent glimpses into the slow speediness, the sad joy, the hugeness of the minute, the extraordinariness of the ordinary will delight any friend, who you want to introduce to part of the full beauty of Africa. Like plaid, these vignettes have a rich over-all color of awe for what is uniquely African. But if you read one of two everyday, you catch or are caught by the cross-patterned and multi-colored details of African life. This is a nice framed gift for friends who wonder about enchantment with Africa. If they read it and meditate on it they will experience snap shots of universal wisdoms and they might even read a couple afri-truths that they can hang in their mind’s gallery for years to come.
