What would you like to share about your background / history / motivation that brought you to mission in Africa? A teacher in Bakersfield, California gave me a copy of the New Testament in the seventh grade (1956). Reading “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John” was the religious experience that prompted me to missionary work. In your own mind, what are some of the highlights of your missionary career in Africa, your successes, your adventures, your greatest joys? Representing the church, such a powerful support in peoples’ lives at critical times (birth, conflicts, sickness, and death), is a privilege and a great satisfaction. Training pastors and counselors for compassion (toward AIDS patients and their families for example) is especially challenging and rewarding personally in a Clinical Pastoral Education program at Bugando Medical Center, Mwanza, Tanzania. What are some of the insights gained through your life / perspective as an American Catholic missioner in Africa that you'd like to share with the world? Americans can always find a rewarding place to contribute to the education of the poor in countries like Tanzania, where student need is great, intelligence keen and motivation high. Being here, and bringing someone’s personal value and possibilities into the light, is a great way to spend the day.
