What would you like to share about your background / history / motivation that brought you to mission in Africa?

When I joined Maryknoll in 1939, all our Mission work was in the China, Korea, Manchuria, Japan and the Philippines. Then with World War II our focus turned to Central and South America. I feel that God's Hand was at work that Maryknoll began work in Africa in 1946. When I was ordained in 1951, I never expected to be assigned there. I realize now even more than before that after nearly 50 years of ministry in Tanzania that our missionary work is truly a "Calling" by God. It is a "Vocation". It is God who selects and calls each of us to His work.

In your own mind, what are some of the highlights of your missionary career in Africa, your successes, your adventures, your greatest joys?

From the day I arrived in Tanganyika in 1951 my life has been one never ending adventure. It seems as if each day there is a new experience. It has been very rewarding to see the response in faith of the African people to the Gospel. We began with an infant Church of some 8,000 Catholics in 1946. With God's Grace and a lot of hard work our Prefecture of Musoma has grown into a mature Church, the Diocese of Musoma. God has truly guided and blessed the work of Maryknoll not only in this diocese but many other areas of Africa.

One of my greatest joys has been my close friendship with Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the Father of the Nation of Tanzania. He has been not only a good friend, but always and inspiration because of his concern for the people of this country and his burning desire for justice and peace for his people.

What are some of the insights gained through your life / perspective as an American Catholic missioner in Africa that you'd like to share with the world?

Living among the Sumbiti and Zanaki peoples for nearly 50 years, I have learned that despite their great poverty, frequent famines, and illnesses, they are a very happy people. I believe this comes from among other things their close human relationships in their extended families and their local communities. Despite their difficult life they are always confident of the moral support and concern of others.
